平江客栈是由姑苏古老民房改建而成，原是明朝望族「方家大宅」，属传统的四进式建筑。客栈的大堂为方氏老宅的主厅，建於明朝中叶，距今已有四百五十余年历史 (承传七代)，是全客栈最古老的建筑物。今天，我们还可以依稀辨认檐梁架上残留的镀金图案花纹。
入住平江客栈，享受的是传统中国历史及文化氛围。客栈内保留了明、清、民国及文革时代的文物，文化大革命时，红卫兵指挥部在方家大宅漆上的「毛主席语录」，堪为历史的见证；厅房中的家具皆保留姑苏古民居的摆设式样；大堂右侧偏堂内摆放有石琴、象棋及围棋，供宾客遣兴；另有书、画案一张，文士可即席挥亳。

客栈提供50间富有苏州特色的客房，分别为标准客房、高级套房、豪华套房及行政套房，每一间房也深具独特苏州传统建筑风格，内部陈设古色古香，使人深刻体验苏州的文化风情。客房分布于十一个庭园的周边，而每个庭园都拥有独特的名称，如“竹园”、“杏林” 及 “劲松苑”等。每间房的名称亦别具一格，以配合庭园的理念及主题，让旅客可感受苏州园林之乡的文化。
客栈内的房间精心设计，分布于11个院子里，如桃园、竹园及净苑等，户户向庭院，室内以苏州传统民居布置，木梁瓦顶，迴廊小苑，清幽恬静。客栈亦设有茶室、膳堂，精巧亲切，让旅客深入体验江南文化，细赏苏州民居的妙趣。

Really lovely place..the rooms and grounds are beautiful and authentic-and all furnishings are top quality and useful. This original chinese style house has many courtyards and wonderful views and is very romantic. Great ambience! |

Absolutely great! One of our best hotels of all our travels in China! Yes, it's right: there are some small language caused problems. But with a little patience you can easily manage to get understood well. Very friendly, helpful and polite staff! Fast and effective ticket service and help in all matters. We would turn back everytime. |

Except from the price this hotel is far away from the 4star Standard. The idea with the old refurbished house and the related ambiente is excellent but the implementation poor. The quarter is dirty, the access cumbersome, Moskitos in the rooms, breakfast only two hours with untrained staff and very poor choice. The recent change in ownership seems to have a negative impact on the spirit of the staff who would like to do better but do not know how. On every internet site where the hotel is listed prices are different. Our superior suite with double bed gave us only the right for one breakfast. Only beacuse of our intervention the hotel manager agreed to include the second breakfast. We moved already after two nights to a hotel of an international chain. |
