Don't Expect Too Much!
Four *? - not sure how the Putuoshan Hotel earns its 4 stars but certainly not for its rooms. The other facilities seemed quite average as well. Having stayed in many Chinese hotel rooms (I live here) I would say good 2 star maybe 3 star but certainly not 4 star compared to other hotels. The standard room we stayed was old and fairly tired – certainly not up to normal 4 star level. The bathroom had all the typical Chinese characteristics – a bit of rust, a few leaks, moldy shower curtain, a bit of accumulated grunge etc.. but also a wobbly shaving mirror, a bath foam and shampoo dispenser (really – individual bottles is more 4 star standard) that was never refilled, and UK style power sockets that I doubt anyone in China has a plug for! Positively there was a drinking water tap/faucet (the local water on Putuoshan is undrinkable and actually stinks) and the towels were soft. I don’t stress too much over hotels but I was disappointed that paying the extra for a 4 star hotel for a little island holiday didn’t live up to expectations. There seems to be many more new hotels on Putuoshan that aren’t listed on Sinohotels or other booking sites. Look around a bit before selecting from the limited choice online. |

We were unable to arrange a suite via Sinohotel and on calling the hotel was told that there were only two suites and that they were booked. On arrival we found that there were plenty of suites but we had to pay through the nose to get one. More expensive by far than Beijing or Shanghai. |
