Astor House hotel with its original name Richard hotel has a very long history which can date back to 1846,( Qing Dynasty Daoguang period,26 years). Since its birth, the hotel enjoyed great fame not only in china, the Far east but the whole world as a deluxe hotel for business man. Indeed, the hotel has witnessed many breakthrough events in Chinese history. The first lamp bulb in the country was lit here, the first telephone in the country was switched on here, and the first sound film from the West was projected here. Plus, China's first ball was held in the hotel, helping to bring to a close the tradition that women should not attend social activities. To some extent, it is really a symbol and epitome of the historical nature of shanghai.
The hotel is a unique combination of old Victorian-style design and modern facilities. Now,it contains 116 various type of rooms, including deluxe, standard, executive and some 4-bed rooms. Each room is well decorated while some of them which celebrities such as Charlie Chaplin and Albert Einstein once stayed, are taken as historic spots with photos hanging on the wall to show guests.
Stay here, a hotel was once the most renowned and luxurious foreign-owned hotel in the Far east, you will place yourself into the nostalgic aomosphere.
Opened in 1846,decorated in 2002.

A wonderful place, even if a bit pricey for China. Staff are very accommodating. Hotel oozes with history. A must stay, at least once, if you are ever in Shanghai. Hotel is right across from the Russian Consulate and is along the Bund. Lots of beautiful buildings within walking distance, and some excellent restaurants as well. This hotel is not like any other place you will stay in China. I wondered the halls looking at the pictures of old Shanghai and enjoying the 19th century architecture. I’d stay there again in a heartbeat. Currently the river walk is under construction, but even with that being the case the location is excellent. Rooms were overly spacious, but lacking art on the room walls. Floors were mid 19th century wood planking. Modern accommodations like the internet were excellent. Breakfast buffet was first rate. And the bed was not like sleeping on the lobby floor…something you seasoned China travelers will appreciate. Location will be stellar once the construction along the river is completed. Enjoy! |

Unfortunately, all of the Bund is under construction for the 2010 World Expo, so the location is not ideal right now, but it will be again soon. Hotel is an old, genteel hotel and looks and feels like one. I would recommend it. |
