The Fortaleza da Barra was one of the fortresses built in the 17th century by the Portuguese to defend Macau against hostile European nations and local pirates. One hundred years later a chapel was built within its walls and dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of the Portuguese garrison. Today, much of the fortress and the Chapel have been preserved as part of the Pousada de Sao Tiago.

All rooms and Suites have mahogany furniture, marble bathrooms and custom-made chandeliers and lamps which were all imported from Portugal and were made to special designs. All rooms overlook the Harbour and are equipped with Satellite TV, mini-bar and fridge and IDD telephone. All rooms, with the exception of Superior rooms and Da Barra Suites have private balconies and all are available with double or single beds with room for an extra bed.
The name of the hotel restaurant, the Os Gatos Terrace and Bar comes from the title of a book by the renowned Portuguese literary figure Fialho de Almeida. In the book, Almeida states that "Portuguese is the most refined, most voluptous, most succulent cuisine in the world".
An outdoor swimming pool with a sunlawn terrace set amidst century old banyan trees offers guests quiet relaxation. The Chapel offers the chance to experience a ceremony with the hotel priest and enjoy the reception in the hotels pictureseque grounds. No formal license for wedding is given.
