Datong's chief attraction is the nearby Yungang Buddhist caves. In the 5th century AD, the Toba, a turkic-speking people, succeeded in unifying all of northern China and forming the Northern Wei dynasty. Adopting Chinese ways, they saw trade, agriculture and Buddhism flourish. Datong was their capital and it remained so until AD 494, when the court moved to Luoyang.
