Siheyuan (enclosed, four-sided courtyards) are typical old Beijing architectural structures. Building began about 800 years ago to house the growing population of the new capital of Beijing. The courtyard structure was a brilliant answer to the relative harsh climatic conditions of north China. The main building or house faces south to provide light and warmth in the winter and eave roofs provided shade. The windows and doors facing inward, toward the central courtyard, and high walls on the outside meant that daily life could continue despite harsh winds and dust storms.
The courtyard dwellings were also built according to the traditional concepts of the five elements that were believed to compose the universe, and the eight diagrams of divination. Nothing about their construction was left to chance, including the precise placement of structures and items along the cardinal points.
