In the Late Song Dynasty (960-1279) and early Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), there was then a huge rock with a natural cavern on the beach, which sounded like drums thundering when sea waves lashed against it. The rock was therefore named "Gulang Shi", meaning the rock of thundering drums, so is the name of the Gulang islet.
Gulang Shi, the symbol of Gulang, stands in front of the hotel.
The Gulang Villa Hotel is situated on the picturesque Gulang islet, designed in the run of the hill. Seen from the hotel, colorful flowers, green trees, blue sky, the broad sea and the wide sands are naturally unified in perfect harmony.

It is located about 15kms from the airport and 6kms from the railway station.

Comments on Gulangyu Villa, while the hotel has excellent embience (very quiet) and just beside a beach, it could be better managed; particularly the rooms. For example, there was no room heating, tap water smelled of rust, drainage was poor and one ended up bathing in a tub of water, there were many mouldy areas in the toilet, etc. Gulangyu should capitalise on its natural environment as a strong selling point. |
