항주시는 절강성의 성도로 국무원이 지정한 전국 중점 경관 관광도시와역사문화도시이며 전국 16개 부성급 도시 중 하나로서 1988년에 국가연해경제개방지구에 포함되었다.
항주는 중국의 7대 고도 중 하나로 유구한 역사를 가지고 있다. 항주시 서북 20킬로미터에서는 사, 오천년 전의 신석기 원시촌락유적이 발견되었고 신석기 말기의 석기, 도기, 옥기가 출토되어 “양저문화”라 불려지고 있다.
